Firmware upgrade process

Keeping your router firmware up to date ensures you have the latest security patches, bug fixes, and feature improvements. Proroute regularly releases firmware updates for all supported router models.

Important: Do not power off the router or disconnect it during a firmware upgrade. Interrupting the process may render the device inoperable.

Before you begin

Prerequisite Detail
Back up your configuration Navigate to System > Backup and download the current config file. You can restore this after the upgrade if settings are not retained.
Verify the current firmware version Check the installed version at Status > Overview before upgrading so you can confirm the new version afterwards.
Use a wired connection Connect to the router via Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. A dropped wireless connection during the upgrade can corrupt the firmware.
Ensure stable power Use a UPS if available. This is especially important for remote or critical deployments where a power interruption cannot be resolved on-site.

Download the correct firmware

  1. Visit the Proroute Firmware Selector
  2. Select your router model exactly (e.g., H685t-W, H820Q, H750)
  3. Download the latest .bin firmware file to your computer

Warning: Installing firmware intended for a different router model may cause the device to malfunction or become inoperable. Always verify the model number matches exactly before proceeding.

Upgrade procedure

  1. Log in to the WebUI at http://192.168.8.1 (or your configured LAN IP)
  2. Navigate to System > Upgrade

Upgrade options

Option Default Description
Keep settings Ticked Preserves current configuration after the upgrade completes. Untick to perform a clean install with factory defaults.
Safe upgrade Ticked Validates the firmware file for compatibility before applying it. Only untick if explicitly instructed by Proroute support.
  1. Click Choose File and select the downloaded .bin file
  2. Click Upload image…

The router will validate the firmware file. If the file is incompatible or incorrect, an error will be shown:

Error: The firmware image is invalid or intended for a different device. Please verify you have downloaded the correct firmware for your router model.

If the file passes validation, a confirmation prompt will appear with the image checksum and file size:

The firmware image was uploaded successfully. The checksum has been verified. Click Proceed to begin the upgrade — the router will reboot automatically when complete.
  1. Click Proceed to begin the upgrade
  2. Wait 3–5 minutes for the upgrade to complete and the router to reboot
  3. Log back in and verify the new firmware version at Status > Overview

Best practices

Scenario Recommended approach
Upgrading to resolve an issue Untick Keep settings. This ensures any problematic configuration is not carried over. Reconfigure the router manually after the upgrade to isolate the issue.
Production deployment — working correctly Back up the configuration first. Keep Keep settings ticked. Verify normal operation immediately after the upgrade completes.
Remote upgrade (unattended site) Schedule during a maintenance window. Ensure alternative access is available (e.g., VPN, out-of-band management). Enable ICMP Check / ping reboot beforehand — if the upgrade causes an issue, the router will auto-reboot rather than remain unreachable.

Troubleshooting

Issue Resolution
Upload fails or times out Use a wired Ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi. Verify the downloaded .bin file is not corrupted — re-download from the firmware selector if unsure.
"Invalid firmware" or validation error Confirm you downloaded the firmware for your exact router model. Model number is printed on the device label.
Router does not reboot after upgrade Wait at least 10 minutes. If the router remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset using the physical RST button.
Settings lost after upgrade Restore your configuration backup at System > Restore.
Router unreachable after upgrade The LAN IP may have reset to 192.168.8.1. Connect directly via Ethernet and navigate to that address. Check you are obtaining a DHCP address from the router.
